-94 Hilux building questions

I got a -94 lux with IFS and AT405. I`m considdering a solid axle swap and 44.. The car is and will be built for driving on snow.
I do not want to use the tg lift kit with leafs. But rather go for the landc. version with coilsprings and not much lift. Therefore I got some questions:
1. What kind of axles do you use?
2. What is your opinion of using a 4r axle with longitude arms rear?
Any other ideas? Manufacturing parts is not an issue

From my experience the orginal hilux axle shafts won't tolerate the forces from bigger tires then 38" for long.

Personally i'm prepping a dana 44 from Grand Wagoneer for our hilux on 39.5" tires since i've given up on welding the cracks on the hilux axle shaft. Not to mention the diffs.

Do you mean 4link suspension?

I am thinking of cutting the rear suspension of a 4Runner and weld it on my lux. Because I want coilsprings :) and maybe I will use airbags instead.

Possibly easiest for you to use axles and suspension from Nissan Patrol

I belive the patrol axles are too wide for the hilux, 160cm wide vs 146cm.

The 4runner 4link and springs work ok, but we've not been using it under hiluxes here in Iceland because it takes up too much space, which we need for extra fuel tanks.

There are however alot of cars here with a custom built 4link which doesn't take up valuable space and airrides instead of springs.

And I still need help about what type of axels, any type from Landcruiser that I can use?
We got some military MB G-wagon at work, maybe I can use some part from the suspension on them? I konow that i can't use the axcels. Got to take a look tomorrow...

Why can't you use the G-wagon axles?
The Hilux rear axles on the ones with IFS are around 8cm wider than the ones that come with a solid front axle.
For example they are only 4cm narrower than the Landcruiser HJ60 axles.
It all depends on how crazy you are willing to go on this build....

G-wagon differantials goes "the wrong way." If you put them on a Hilux, it will go the wrong way. Can be solved by cutting the axels in 3, turn the differential upside down, and weld it together angain.

HJ60 sounds interesting... What kind of differential has the HJ60? I guess it is not 8" :)
I have been thinking of HDJ80, but they are very expensive her in Norway.

I think the J60 has 9,5" axles. Rear axle has a cable locker which I think you can also put in the front.

You could take the transfer case from the G-Wagon, and use it behind the Toyota transfer case. Then you would have extra low range, which is a good thing and you could use the axles from the G-Wagon.

The G-Wagon transfer case is "divorced", which means it is connected by a very short driveshaft. Because of that, it should not be very difficult to use it behind the stock Toyota transfer case. The Hilux should have plenty of space for that!

I have been thinking of a V8 with auto and G-wagon transfercase. Many ways to do this :)

A friend of me, has a complete LJ 70 frame that I can get. Is this stronger or have it the same strenght as the Hilux IFS-rear axel?

If your Hilux is a V6 the LJ70 is the same strength as the rear on a IFS hilux, the diffrence is the size of the bearings that hold the differential, they are weaker in the 2.4ltr models diesel/petrol, the ring and pinion is the same, exept that the LJ 70 has a reverse front diff. (high pinion)

I have 2,4D. So then the LJ70 axels and diffs will be stronger. But will they hold for 44"?? I know it is hard to say yes or no, since the drivingstile is very different. I am not a crazy driver, quite nice driver actually :)

I don't know about the 44" mine is on 38". Some have used them with minor or no problems on 44", others have had to replace the wheel bearings every year or more often.

The biggest problem if you are going to use the rear axle from the LJ70 is the offset differential, which you could solve by using the lj70 transfercase and possibly the gearbox, and you would have to relocate the fueltank.

The LJ70 front axle is about 6cm narrower than the IFS hilux rear axle, I used 1,5" aluminium spacers I bought on Ebay (1 1/4" were not available), it worked out fine for me.

You will have quite worse brakes on the lj70 front axle then you have on the IFS system, I solved this by getting HJ60 front discs and using the IFS brake caliper and pads, you will need to cut a little bit out of the shield around the disk, but other than that it's plug and play

I've decided to use coil springs and axles with 139.7. Then I can use e tires I have for a while. I have also the dual transfer case with 2.28 and 4.70.
